Roller Derby

So here I am now after  about a 2 year hiatus from my skateboard photography some time in 2010, my sis in law approached me, and told me she joined roller derby and asked if I would like to go check it out and shoot one of their bouts…. hmmm.

Now I use to watch roller derby back around the 70s but I think by this time it had already sacrificed its legitimacy to commercialism antics, bad acting, and false drama but man it was fun to watch and I loved it so this was basically what I was expecting to see at my first bout.

I have happily been proven wrong ever since that day. Do not let the cute names, fish nets and short shorts fool you. Roller Derby is very much so a LEGITIMATE sport, the players are very competitive and train extremely hard at skills, endurance and strategy. How do I know this.. the ladies practice hard and play hard, they pull, break, sprain, twist, concuss, and beat on each other on a daily basis, and often show up at the next practice or bout re-wrapped, bandaged, wearing casts,eye patches ready to do it again.

Since the initial writing of this, Roller Derby was still fairly underground but upon the updating of this site, Roller Derby as really gained traction.. slowly moving away from the short shorts, cute skirts, fishnets and creative names, many teams are going full on profession level sports uniforms and returning back to their given names.

I will miss those creative names, and yes short shorts, fishnets and short skirts.. but I really do like the evolution Roller Derby has taken to prove it truly is a very legitimate sport to be taken seriously.

About the time I started shooting Roller Derby was when I started using Social Media so I never really took the time in creating a website dedicated to my Roller Derby involvement since I went from shooting skateboarding which was more an individual sport to Derby being a team sport, it had become way more convienent sharing the photos via social media so thats where you will find most if not all of my Derby Photography between my Personal Facebook Page and my Soulcaptor Facebook page.
